What are cookies?
Cookies are files which can be downloaded onto your computer through websites.
They are essential tools for the providence of a number of services in the information society. Amongst them, they allow a web to store and restore information about a user´s browsing habits or a computer, and depending on the obtained information, they can be used to recognize the user and improve the service provided.
Kinds of cookies
Depending on the society that manages the domain from where the cookies are sent and the data obtained is treated, two types can be distinguished:
- Own cookies:
Those which are sent to the user´s terminal from a computer or domain managed by the own editor and which from the service required by the user is provided.
- Third party cookies:
Those which are sent to the user´s terminal from a computer or domain which is not managed by the editor, but by another entity which manages the data obtained through the cookies.
In the case of the cookies being installed from a computer or domain managed by the own editor but the information being managed by a third party, these cannot be considered own cookies.
Another classification exists depending on the time they remain on the browser of the client, these being:
- Session cookies:
Designed to obtain and store data while the user accesses a web. They´re often used to store information that is only relevant to preserve, for the offering of a service requested by the user in only one occasion. (eg: a list of the acquired products)
- Persistent cookies:
The data is still stored on the computer and can be accessed and treated during a defined period by the responsible of the cookie, and it can go between a few minutes to various years.
Lastly, there is another classification with five types of according to the end in which the data will be used:
- Technical cookies:
Those which allow the user to navigate through a website, platform or application and use the different options and services that exist on it, such as managing the traffic and communication of data, identifying a session, accessing restricted areas, remembering the elements which compose an order, carry out an order of purchase, make the request of inscription or participation of an event, use security features during browsing, store data for the diffusion of videos or sound or to share contents through social media.
- Personalization cookies:
They allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics, which are preferred according to a certain criteria in the user´s computer, such as the language, the kind of browser from which the user is navigating, the location from where the user is accessing, etc.
- Analysis cookies:
They allow their responsible to track and analyze the behaviour of the users on the webs they are linked to. The obtained information from these sorts of cookies is used in the mediation of activity on webs, applications or platforms and to elaborate browsing profiles of the users of those sites, with the objective of introducing new upgrades according to the analysis of data from the users that use the service provided.
- Advertisement cookies:
They allow the management, in the most efficient way, of the advertising spaces.
- Cookies of behavioral advertisement:
They store information about the behaviour of the users obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows developing a specific profile to show advertising according to it.
- External social networks cookies:
Deactivation and elimination of cookies
You have the option to allow, block or eliminate the cookies installed on your computer through the configuration of the browser options. When you deactivate the cookies, some of the services available could become inoperative. The way to deactivate the cookies is different for each browser, but it can usually be done through the Settings or Options menu. The user can also choose which cookies they want to be available and on which websites.
